Speed is one of the most important factors when choosing a VPN. A VPN that slows your connection to a crawl defeats the purpose for streaming, gaming, downloading, and even general browsing. We conducted comprehensive speed tests on 15 VPN providers using a 1 Gbps fiber connection, testing multiple server locations across three continents at different times of day.
Methodology
Each VPN was tested using the Ookla Speedtest CLI tool on at least 5 server locations (New York, London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Sydney). We ran 3 tests per location at morning, afternoon, and evening, averaging all results. Tests were conducted using each provider recommended protocol for maximum speed.
Speed Test Results Summary
| Provider | Protocol | Nearby (Mbps) | Long Distance (Mbps) | Latency (ms) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | NordLynx | 890 | 620 | 12 |
| ExpressVPN | Lightway | 850 | 590 | 14 |
| Surfshark | WireGuard | 780 | 540 | 16 |
| PIA | WireGuard | 720 | 480 | 18 |
| CyberGhost | WireGuard | 710 | 430 | 20 |
Key Findings
NordVPN is the fastest VPN in 2026. Its NordLynx protocol consistently delivered the highest speeds across all server locations. On nearby servers, we measured speeds within 11% of our unprotected baseline -- virtually unnoticeable in real-world use.
WireGuard-based protocols dominate. Every VPN using WireGuard or a WireGuard-based protocol outperformed those using OpenVPN. The speed difference is typically 2-3x, making protocol choice the single biggest factor in VPN speed.
Distance matters. All VPNs showed significant speed reduction on long-distance connections (US to Asia, for example). For the best speeds, connect to the nearest available server.
